Today I have started analysing previous students music videos. Firstly, as it is a task that I have to complete, but it also gives me inspiration for my music video.  It is good to see what previous A2 students can do, so that I can relate it to my own music video and style.

Today I completed my audience research task which is basically where I describe who will watch my music video and who it is aimed at. I completed on prezi so that I could show all the different people.  Also I completed my research into equipment as well as an analysis of different bands magazine adverts so I know how to promote my digipak.

Magazine Adverts

The Vaccines song 'Wreckin Bar' is the song I have for my music video, so their magazine adverts are influential to my project. Immediately you recognize the the unusual background. The colour pink is not normally associated with Indie music, so it catches the readers attention instantly. The colour pink highlights femininity, therefore perhaps The Vaccines are attempting to gain a wider audience than the typical Indie fan. However, the quirky nature of The Vaccines demonstrates the colour pink. "What Did You Expect From The Vaccines?" is the name of the album they are intending on promoting, and this is the bands ironic and almost rhetorical approach to the colour pink. The girl in the background looks enticing and this will attract a male gaze.

Coldplay are a similar indie band to The Vaccines. There success is due to their iconic style of music and this is emphasised through this advert. The random selection of graffiti and bright colours suggest this album is going to be very different to the plain album covers they have had before such as 'Parachutes'. The bubble writing is hard to distinguish due to the distorted background and this grabs the reader as they attempt to uncover the almost cryptic language. It is evident that Coldplay want the audience to see that this album is different to the rest as it is so different. The release date is clear as well as a quote from the artist describing the new album.

The Foo Fighters are a popular rock band that have had immense success. Their magazine advert for their 'Greatest Hits' album is very simplistic. Due to their success their logo and name are well known so they do not need to promote themselves as much as other bands. The colour red is bright and majestic, signifying they are coming to the end of their career and releasing their 'greatest' songs from their 'reign'.

Research into Equipment

For filming my music video, I will use the Canon 550D digital SLR camera. This camera is provided by the school so means I will not have to buy my own. This is a standard camera that can be used throughout the recording of my music video, both for standard and high definition recordings. A range of lenses can be used to accompany this camera, including a standard lens, and a fish eye lens, each offering a range of different effects. 

Also, I will pictures on the camera to go on my digipak front and back. 

 

 

The next piece of equipment I will use is a tripod. The tripod is very effective as it means I can leave the camera to roll whilst I sort things out. Moreover, the tripod means I can take a clear image for m digipak.

I might not use the tripod through as a non steady image is good for my video. 

Furthermore, I will use Adobe programmes, Photoshop and Premier to edit my footage. A programme I haven't used is Adobe Effects which I will have to learn to use via tutorials.Adobe photoshop will enable me to create an effective and attractive digipak.

I just finished my Digipak Analysis. I analysed Mylo Xyloto by Cold play and I also analysed Babel by Mumford and Sons. The bands are both Indie / Pop bands similar to the music to my music video. I will try and plan my didgipak around these.

This week I have been thinking about my music video song. I have a list of a few songs and the one that stands out to me and my teacher is The Vaccines - Wreckin' Bar (Ra Ra Ra). It is an up beat indie tune and will be great for a music video.

This week I picked a music video, Flotbots 'Handlebars'. The music video is a cartoon and very ironic. I analysed the music video using screen shots and detailed analysis. The music video tells a story of two friends. One takes a path down the route of captilism and one is free 'with the wind' type attitude.

I am about to start to plan a list of possible locations for where I will shoot my music video. They all must fit into the Indie genre, so i will look at different music videos from similar artists in the Indie genre to gain inspuration and ideas of: time, location, setting, lighting etc

I have just uploaded a mood board which I did on Prezi. The mood board is essentially a collection or collage of pictures that are realted to the Indie genre. I am basing my video on videos by artists such as Foo Fighters, Arctic Monkeys and Kasabian.

Today I started, finished and uploaded my powerpoint on Codes and Conventions of a music video. It made me think about the things I need to put and do to have a successful music video. For example: Camera movements- 

•The movement of the camera is used to follow and trace the artist or band. Camera movements include tilts, pans, tracking and crane shots.

•Tracking is mainly used in ‘Walk’ as it follows him walking down the road.

•Also zooms and are used to focus on the artist singing.

 EMI will also be very beneficial for me if I chose them to be my distributors. Bands such as The Arctic Monkeys and Foo Fighters are signed to this label. This is the main music label. Although there is also I think Columbia Records would be a good music label to distribute my own as bands such as Kasabian. My music video will be of the Indie style genre so having the experience of this bands, will give me an advantage in the market.

Last week I started a powerpoint on the history of music videos. I searched the internet for the first music videos that appeared after World War II, up until the present day. My search took me from Bob Dylan and The Beatles to MTV and YouTube. I then uploaded it to slideshare and tried to upload it to my blog.
